![]() ![]() For anyone looking at this like it's some formulaic effort, there are parts that get quite dissonant and proper dark, quickly. That mixture of subterranean doom, bloated with a thick heaviness, tainted with the smothering opaqueness of somber black metal melody makes for a most potent result. This doesn't so much apply here as although the songs all do exactly what one would expect, the album is filled with well thought out, intuitive musical themes. Usually the biggest problem with these kinds of albums that is, albums utterly content with playing by the band and genre's standards and not beyond that is they'll settle comfortably into a nice groove, making for a fun listen but only just that, as they've inherently categorized themselves as non-essential and as lacking the ambition and bravery the greats will achieve. Sure there's mentions of "Satan !" and what not, but there is also talk of "being swallowed by an emotional cold", "a darkness we can not tolerate" or "(the) world moves, in mysterious ways" and there's an intriguing willingness to establish an existential dread with key words striking at opportune moments for the music to hit harder and further make its point. They're not always the dumb old clichés spewed out without a second thought that the genre is swarming with. What's more is the lyrics actually supply an added value to the atmosphere, if one would have a little read-through along with the tracks playing. Satyricon do not here produce a masterpiece of originality, but one can't help but feel there is a real sense of drive and momentum in this as it makes for a genuinely pleasant listen in the spirit of black metal. They have the correct combination of rhythm and melodic definition to earn the right to become these anticipated moments throughout. It's downright simple musically, with the composition tending towards a progressive song structure but the individual parts are these basic sections of suspended distorted notes or power chords on repeat that just do not relent, and they work in a way that they're almost bewitching in that sense. ![]() What's essentially so appreciable about 'Volcano' is the straightforward nature of it. ![]()
